Trey Jewell: Forum

I loved hearing your songs at the Songwriters Festival (especially the "Weird" one). You earned a lot of respect from everyone when you took the crowd into consideration by doing a "clean" song while the kids were present. You are a class act.

Very seldom do you find an artist who has the all the qualities that it takes to be successful in the music business. Trey Jewell is one that has all the right traits to be a star in the country music industry. At the young age of 19 trey can take control and entertain an audience like a seasoned pro. He has been writing hit songs since the age of 13, starting with one of his signature songs, "blue rider". I met Trey at a songwriter's night and immediately saw his talent and I invited him to the motivation plus studio to hear more. The rest is history. I believe Trey is going to be a superstar and I am excited to be part of this project.

Trey Jewell Performance @ " 2006 Andrew Lee Memorial Music Festival" Potts Camp MS and a first hand review thereof....

I witnessed Trey Jewell on stage for the first time back in the early part of summer of this year at the " 2006 Nashville Songwriters Festival". Being placed in the position of following one of Trey's performances with one of my own, I believe I have the distinct right, and let me add.....the privilege, to write this review.

At age 18, I believe Trey to be one of the freshest and most energetic new acts I have witnessed in my near forty years of guitarslinging touring; and his band is the perfect compliment for this fast rising star from Memphis TN.

I find his songwriting skills to be more than acceptable; in fact I would say they run the full gammet from heart-touching ballads, to energetic rockers, as well as some of the most humerous live on stage little filler ditties I have ever heard.. I find Trey Jewell to be " the real deal" and how refreshing that is in this day and age.

On the final weekend of September this year, our paths crossed again at the 3rd annual "Andrew Lee Memorial Music Festival" held in Potts Camp, MS. As my band Dubble Shot was one of the headlining acts, and I furnished the sound system for the festival, I had a double opportunity to interact with all the acts on the bill that weekend.

The weekend provided three exceptionally memorable events for me personally. I got to debut my brand spankin new band Dubble Shot to a festival crowd in the South I love so dearly, I was blessed to once again perform with my all time favorite musician, the legendary high country MS. Blues slide guitarist Kenny Brown, and last but certainly not least, the opportunity to take the stage with Trey Jewell and his band..

The opportunity to perform with Trey came about in the most unlikely of ways. Trey's drummer Johnny Friedman (an incredible talent in his own right), woke me from a most comfortale sleep in our little motorhome, at 8 am on that Saturday morning. He was on stage and banging his heart out, long before the majority of the campers had even thought of rising from their tents. Being one never to miss an opportunity to jam with really good players, I shucked on some clothes grabbed my Les Paul Junior, jumped up on stage, plugged in, and started throwing out some guitar licks along side Johnny. Next thing I knew, Trey was on stage, then we were joined by his daddy Wendell (one of the best singers I have ever heard bar none), and then we were joined by my wife Pam singing along side Wendell. Something that started out as just a jam soundcheck, turned into the first of performance of the day that had ten scheduled acts.

After about 45 minutes (give or take a few minutes), we all walked off stage to applause from those who had been awakend from a sound sleep, along with others that had begun to arrive for a day filled with music.

After an invite over to the Jewell campsite for coffee, I had the great honour and privilege of being asked to take on the lead guitar duties for Trey's evening set .Their regular guitar player was unable to make the festival due to family commitments.

At first I was a little hesitant, as there is a huge difference between an early morning jammin' for fun session, opposed to a for real scheduled performance. The last thing I wanted to do was to mess up the performance of these talented musicians. After considerable coaxing I agreed to join them on stage that evening. I can honestly say at this time I certainly am glad I did!

Some 14 hours after the morning jam session, I had the pleasure of jumping up the 4 steps to the stage and joining Trey and his band in what I can only describe as "Musical Magic" and one of the best times I have ever had in a career that will soon span 40 years.

Trey's set for the evening was a mix of his terrific originals, some classic country standards, and some good ole Allman Brothers and Syknyrd Southern Rock. All I can say is I tried to play my best, and that came pretty easily due to the incredible percussion that Johnny Friedman flawlessly provided. Equally enjoyable was trading guitar work with Trey, and an occasional harmony with Wendell.

I should go on record at this time making apology for the near 8 minute guitar solo on "Sweet Home Alabama" lol......(I don't remember the Skynyrd Boys playing it that long!) but, I was simply having a hoot with Trey and the band. Considering the fact that the entire crowd was on their feet, dancing, screaming, and applauding (which led to two encores and a standing ovation), I don't think anyone really minded us doubling the length of the song. lol .....

Personally I walked off that stage feeling 18 myself. A tired 18 I must admit, but a half hour of signing autographs after the set, for people that ranged from 18 to 50 years in age made this old guitarslinger feel young again. Even if it was short lived.

In closing I would like to simply say, if you ever have the opportunity to see Trey Jewell perform, don't pass it up! I give you my word it will be a most pleasurable and memorable experience!
